"Doin' Dirt" was written by Maroon 5's lead singer Adam Levine together with Shellback, who produced the song.〔 Shellback also co-produced the lead single from ''Overexposed'', "Payphone" together with Benny Blanco.〔 "Doin' Dirt" was recorded at Conway Studios in Los Angeles and MXM Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, by Noah "Mailbox" Passovoy and Shellback. Sam Holland Såklart served as recording assistant, while Eric Eylands was engineering assistant.〔 Serban Ghenea mixed the song at Mixstar Studios in Virginia Beach together with John Hanes and Phil Seaford who served as mixing engineer and mixing assistant respectively.〔 Shellback provided the programming, additional guitar, bass and the keys.〔
